Risky Behaviors on the Public Transport

The weather outside is frightful, and my boots are so delightful,
since we've got places to go, let me wear them out!!

Since San Diego was almost eternally sunny, there were only few
"boots-appropriate" days and my boots were crying out in
my closet, screaming "THESE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR WALKIN'!"

When I do wear them, I have to rely on the public transport.
I don't really wanna walk too much and hurt my feet.

And sometimes, I engage in some risky behaviors on the tram...

So, to get on the trams and buses in Geneva, you need to buy tickets.
They've got one-hour unlimited tickets for 3 francs,
9 to midnight unlimited tickets for 7 francs, and so on.

I'm a law-abiding citizen of the world, so I buy the tickets.
But, you could get a ride without it, if you were willing to take a chance.
If a controller comes on the vehicle to check your ticket and if you don't
have it, then you could get a fine. And that can be very pricy.

So, out of fear or out of honesty, people voluntarily buy the tickets.

But I've never, for once, encountered a controller on any of the public
transportation in Geneva. It's only been two months, but I use it quite
frequently and it's encouraging me to behave a little treacherously.

Sometimes, I don't buy the ticket.
Sometimes it's because I simply forget, or other times, it's because
I don't wanna miss the tram in front of me by buying the tickets.

Guilty as charged.

I confess, I was a habitual offender...

Two years ago, I was traveling through central Europe with
my German friend Schnitzel and his Japanese girlfriend Ramen.
We never paid for the public transport.

In Vienna and Budapest, the controllers were ubiquitous, but somehow
we managed to get away scot-free. When we see them coming,
we'd move through the tram and get off before they get to us.

My self-justification of this crime was;
"Well, Schnitzel is practically a local, and if he's doing it,
then it's 'when in Austria, do as Austrians do,' right?!"

Lame...

Being Japanese thus polite(?),
Ramen and I felt guilty, but Schnitzel was a pro at this,
and we just followed him as sheep follow a shepherd.

Then comes my secondary self-justification;
"Well, I'm still a student, right? Students are poor,
so I'm poor. I can't pay for this, I'm too poor."

I had never done a budget trip like that.
We CARPOOLED from Salzburg to Vienna, Vienna to Budapeste.
We stayed at a complete STRANGER's apartment in Vienna,
we tried to stay with ANOTHER STRANGER in Budapest, but it didn't
work out, so we stayed at a YOUTH HOSTEL. Wild.

I'm no longer a student, I can't do that anymore, I'm responsible.
But I can't help but smirk in my hard-earned boots after I realize
that I forgot to buy a ticket,

Wintery weather to showcase my Frye boots,
Playing tag and hide-and-seek with controllers,
Summer adventure with Schnitzel and Ramen,
These are a few of my favorite things.
