Speed Freaks and Lederhosen

One of the highlights of the trip (for Steven)
was this.
c0201334_8492850.jpg

Autobahn.
This is the infamous motorway with no speed limit.
(In general, that is. There are exceptions.)

OMG. People drive so fastemoticon-0104-surprised.gif
It wasn't raining at the time, but the road was still wet from the rain.
But they drove at an amazing speed. 150, 160+ km/h?

I think Steven went up to around 140 km/h at times,
but I felt somewhat uneasy...
I had to hold on to the handle on the dooremoticon-0127-lipssealed.gif

However, because we traveled at the speed of light (so it seemed),
we were in Munich in no time!!!

Here, we bid good-bye to the rental car and we were car-less once again.
c0201334_8591973.jpg

In the picture: Neues Rathaus at Marienplatz.

The first day in Munich, we had a mission to fulfill:
Buy lederhosen!!
c0201334_98568.jpg

I'm sure you can guess why we were in Munich at this time of the year?
Oktoberfest, of course!!

We wanted to wear lederhosen and go to Oktoberfestemoticon-0102-bigsmile.gif
You know, to have a more authentic experience?

So, we went around town like a pair of headless chickens
trying to find "affordable" lederhosen.
c0201334_951272.jpg

In the picture: Viktualienmarkt

But...

They're quite pricy.
After all, they're made of leather.
On average, they cost 170 euros and up.
If they're of better quality and detailed,
then it's anywhere from 500 to 1000+.

The cheapest we found were at C&A.
About 100 euros each.
And they looked it.
They were obviously cheaply made.
c0201334_1004939.jpg

In the picture: National Theatre Munich.

So we gave up...emoticon-0106-crying.gif

I hate this feeling of defeat in shopping.
Oh well.

At least we still get to enjoy cute German men in lederhosenemoticon-0110-tongueout.gif

Don't you think they look sexy in them???

Oberammergau and Mittenwald

The title looks like a tongue twister, doesn't it??
German words are so long and they seem so complex...

Anyway, after a hike to Marienbrücke,
we checked out at the hotel,
and we continued our exploration in Bavaria.

We usually plan every detail in a trip,
but this trip was rather free-style and capricious.
Deciding to visit some place as we drove felt fresh.

First town we stopped at was Oberammergau.
c0201334_9305598.jpg

I recognized the name of the town because it was mentioned in
"1000 Places to Visit Before You Die."
This small town is known for its town-scale Passion play production.

Each decade, about the half of the inhabitants participate in
the Passion play that their ancestors vowed to carry on performing.
This amazing tradition has continued since 1634!
c0201334_9522868.jpg

I'm not a fan of the play, but it would be quite an experience
to spectate such a production.
(I have to wait another 9 years for the next one!)

Steven bought a traditional German hat,
and I bought a Christmas ornamentemoticon-0105-wink.gif

It was so cold, it didn't feel wrong at all to buy an ornament!!
c0201334_9582426.jpg

This black car in the picture was the car we rented.
(The price of gas in Europe is so shocking!!!)

After leaving this "passion"ately religious town,
we headed somewhere more to my speed.

To Mittenwald.
c0201334_1065078.jpg

By the way, this drink is called "Radler"
It's a mixture of beer and lemonade, basically.
The sweetness of lemonade makes the beer so much more drinkable!
I liked it very much!!

Remember I told you earlier how cold it was?
Here's the proof!
c0201334_10114572.jpg

Snow on the ground!!!
OMG.
No wonder it's COLD!

I've been wanting to come visit this town for some time.
c0201334_10145543.jpg

This town is known for its violin (strings) making history.
Unfortunately, it was Monday, thus the violin museum was closedemoticon-0114-dull.gif
c0201334_10223897.jpg

Despite the fact the town became famous for the violin,
there's only one violin store on the main street...
Rather, lederhosen shops were more prominent!

I was horribly disappointed about that,
(and also that I didn't get a violin)
but the town has another selling point: decorative paintings on the walls.
At least they were still there and interesting.
Real pity, though, that the town isn't too violiny anymore.
(I guess they don't sell them as well as lederhosen.)

If we hadn't had enough time, I'd have just visited Oberammergau.

But we had time, and the road trip continuesemoticon-0105-wink.gif

White Church or Wies Church??

Have having visited the castle in the morning,
we had a plenty of time to do more sight-seeing in the afternoon.

Unfortunately, it never stopped raining that day.
It also being Sunday, the town of Füssen seemed awfully dead.
At least we managed to get lunch and strolled through Old Town.
c0201334_6164232.jpg

See? I told you it was dead.

Luckily, we had the rental car,
so we could relatively comfortably sightsee Bavaria.
c0201334_6205677.jpg

A car is a valuable asset to travel along the Romantic Road.
(You see how "Romantic Road" is also written in Japanese?)

Our destination of the day was highlighted in brown in the sign.
Wieskirche.

As we drove along the countryside,
we saw signs like this from time to time.
But they were widespread and very vague...

We weren't entirely confident, but we got there in the end!!
c0201334_6194790.jpg

While looking for the church,
we kept searching for a white church.

Because we thought it was "weiss"(=white)
The two of us!!
In reality, it's "wies"!!
c0201334_6373915.jpg

(We both must be dyslexicemoticon-0127-lipssealed.gif)

The whole time we were in there (and even after),
we thought it was "White Church".

And the interior was so light and airy,
I thought that name was appropriate.
c0201334_6381087.jpg

Don't you think this church is particularly white and bright inside?
Usually, churches are dark and stony.
c0201334_6383299.jpg

Wies or Weis, either way we thought the church was very pretty.

There's a café located conveniently situated right next to it,
so we could take turns visiting the church
while the other waited with Truffle, sipping hot chocolateemoticon-0105-wink.gif

Creepy Hotel by the Castle

After we left Swarovski Crystal World,
we made our way to
what would be our home for the next two nights.

The journey through the mountainous Tyrol region
was pastoral and picturesque,
that is, until it decided to rain dogs and cats.

It started to rain extremely hard,
and the sound of raindrops hitting the windshield was loud
to the point it scared poor Truffle sleeping on my lap.

Since the visibility was compromised by the rain and the darkness,
driving also became less enjoyable and more challenging for Steven.

By the time we arrived in Schwangau, where the hotel was,
it was already 9 pm. A lot later than our scheduled arrival time.

The hotel is located above a restaurant,
just below the gate of Neuschwanstein Castle.

When I first heard that we'd be staying in a room above a restaurant,
right next to a castle,
I had imagined that this place was a convivial, romantic place.
You know, a place like in the old days where knights and travelers
would come to a pub and ask the barman if there was a room.
That kind of place, I thought this was gonna be.

What we arrived to couldn't have been more different.
It was a dark, somber place with no apparent signs of life.
Lively pub? No.
A haunted house? Yes.

In the rain, outside an enormous and empty castle,
it couldn't have been scarier.

No one was working there.
No receptionists, no porters.
All there was was a call box.

Using it, Steven talked to someone,
and that mysterious person told him to retrieve our room key
from one of the locked boxes next to the call box.
(This part was rather futuristic.)

Inside the building was also dark and scary.
No sign of life.
It was unnaturally quiet.

When we came to the hall way where was room was,
a lady came out from her room.
This shocked me because I didn't expect to see anyone,
but also she looked under nourished and ghostly.

Once she saw us, she went back into her room...

As it was getting late, we went down to the town right away
after we dropped our luggage off.

On the way to the town,
I said to Steven,
"That lady was creepy and looked very unstable.
I hope she's not a serial killer."

Then he says to me,
"Serial killers are rarely women."

"Rarely, you say."

Steven tried to reassure me.
"Yes, rarely, so you don't need to worry about her."

But I didn't find that remark reassuring.
"But that means there are 'a few' out there.
She could be one of rare ones."

"Well, we'd better lock the door tonight."
So he suggested.
c0201334_1731411.jpg

We were all exhausted from the intense drive.
Thankfully, we slept very well despite our concerns.

But in the broad daylight,
this creepy restaurant hotel looked much more cheerful.

With the proximity to the Neuschwanstein Castle,
its creepiness can be easily forgotten.
c0201334_173514.jpg

I didn't exactly feel like Cinderella,
but I enjoyed staying in a place so close to the Cinderella Castleemoticon-0105-wink.gif

「スワロフスキー・クリスタルワールド」emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Alexander McQueen

Have Book -Will Travel

Steven has his book reading ritual when it comes to traveling.

He likes to read a book that is set in the country that he's visiting.
So, on the way to a destination, whether on a plane or on a train,
he starts reading the book.
But it's not a guide book or a non-fiction novel.
He prefers reading a fiction.

For example,
for we took our grand Scandinavian trip years ago,
he was reading this book.
c0201334_558183.jpg

I read this book after the visit,
but it brought me back many fond memories of our sojourn in Oslo.
(By the way, this is one of my favorite books of all time.)

When Steven went to China for business + pleasure,
he read this.
c0201334_651428.jpg

He apparently enjoyed reading this book.
For his next trip to China, he's planning to read "Peony in Love".

His recent Japan trip was accompanied by this book.
c0201334_682128.jpg

I guess it was an intense book.

This practice of his started quite accidentally.
When the movie "Interview with the Vampire" was really popular,
he decided to read the book before he saw the film.
At the same time, his Paris trip came about.
He ended up reading the Paris chapter of the book in Paris,
which he enjoyed immensely.

I haven't done this myself.
I usually read the book he has read on a trip after we get back.
It works for me.
The memories are still fresh, and they give another layer to the story.
And I get to live in the memory of a recent trip all over again.

I urge you to give it a try.
The book should be fictional (more romantic)
and it should be read during or after the trip.

By the way, I'm on the road now.
Here's a hint for you as to where I am now.
